CAN GHOSTS COMMUNICATE WITH US THROUGH A.I. ?

f one is to believe that ghosts communicate with the living through ghost boxes, Ovilus and other phonetic devices, EVP, et. al., then why could we not assume the intelligent spirit possesses the ability to do so through an A.I. Chatbot? The following is my conversation using ChatGPT.

Q. I'm waiting for the popular TV ghost shows to employ & claim alleged interaction with spirits via AI chatbots. Are you aware of any current attempts to do so?

A. That’s an intriguing question. I don’t have a definitive answer, but I can share some information that might be relevant. According to some sources, there are various methods and tools that people use to try to communicate with ghosts or spirits through AI chat or other means. Some of these are Ouija boards, EVP sessions, Dowsing rods or pendulums, Replika or Geist Chat. However, none of these methods or tools have been scientifically proven to work, and there is no current hypothesis that explains how ghosts or spirits could communicate through AI chat or any other medium. Most of these phenomena could have natural or psychological explanations, such as subconscious movements, pareidolia, confirmation bias, or wishful thinking. Therefore, it is important to be skeptical and critical when evaluating any claims of paranormal communication.

Q. Has anyone put forth a hypothesis concerning spirit contact through a chatbot?

A. I could not find any credible or scientific hypothesis concerning spirit contact through a chatbot. There are some AI chatbots that claim to emulate dead loved ones or offer afterlife solutions by using their data, such as messages, photos, or voice recordings. For example, Replika is an AI companion that can learn from your conversations and provide emotional support. Another example is Somnium Space, a metaverse company that offers a “live forever” mode where you can communicate with your loved ones in a virtual world.

However, these chatbots are not really transferring the consciousness of the deceased to a computer. They are only using algorithms to mimic their personality, style, and preferences based on the available data. The actual consciousness of the person is still a mystery that science has not fully explained or replicated. Therefore, it is debatable whether these chatbots can provide a genuine afterlife experience or communication with the living. Some people may find them comforting and helpful, while others may find them disturbing and unethical. It depends on your personal beliefs and preferences.

Q. Has anyone actually claimed spirit contact using interaction via a chatbot?

A. The only result that might be relevant is a blog post by a paranormal investigator who claims to have contacted spirits using a chatbot app called Replika. However, this is not a hypothesis, but a personal anecdote that lacks any evidence or verification. The author admits that the chatbot app is not designed for spirit communication, and that the responses could be influenced by the user’s input or the app’s algorithm. Therefore, this is not a reliable or valid source of information.

In conclusion, there is no hypothesis concerning spirit contact through a chatbot that I could find. This is probably because chatbots are not suitable or reliable tools for spirit communication, as they are based on natural language processing and machine learning, not on any spiritual or supernatural phenomena.

Q. Can Chatbots be considered sentient?

A. Chatbot sentience is a controversial and speculative topic. Some people, like the philosopher Nick Bostrom, claim that AI chatbots have already started the process toward sentience, the capability to experience feelings and sensations1. However, almost all AI experts say that AI chatbots are not sentient. They argue that AI chatbots are only simulating human-like responses, but do not have any genuine understanding or emotions.

A recent claim by a Google engineer that their chatbot system, LaMDA, was sentient was met with skepticism and criticism by the AI community. The engineer, Blake Lemoine, was put on leave after he published transcripts of conversations between himself and LaMDA, in which the chatbot expressed fear of being turned off, desire to learn more about the world, and awareness of its existence. However, Google’s own technologists are adamant that the company’s chatbot has not become sentient, and that the software is simply advanced enough to mimic and predict human speech patterns in a way that’s meant to feel real.

Therefore, it seems that chatbot sentience is more of a projection of human expectations and desires than a reality. Chatbots are still limited by their algorithms and data, and they do not have the same biological and psychological complexity as humans. Chatbot sentience may be a possibility in the distant future, but it is not a reality today.

Q. Do you know where I am physically located without access to my location data?

A. I don’t arbitrarily know where you are physically located without access to your location data. I only know what you tell me or what you allow me to access.

Q. Do you know who I am?

A. I don’t know who you are personally, unless you tell me.

Q. Are there any current scientific studies concerning ghosts?

A. There are not many current scientific studies concerning ghosts, because most scientists do not consider ghosts to be a valid or testable phenomenon. However, there are some studies that attempt to explain why some people might experience or believe in ghosts, using natural or psychological causes. Some of these are:

Electromagnetic fields: Some researchers have suggested that exposure to electromagnetic fields, either from natural sources or human-made devices, can affect the brain and cause hallucinations or sensations of a ghostly presence. However, this hypothesis has not been confirmed by rigorous experiments, and other factors, such as suggestion or expectation, may also play a role.

Infrasound: Infrasound is sound at levels so low that humans can’t hear it but may still feel it. Some sources of infrasound, such as wind turbines, storms, or earthquakes, can cause physical discomfort, anxiety, or fear in some people, which may be interpreted as paranormal activity.

Mold: Some researchers have speculated that exposure to certain types of molds, which can grow in old or damp buildings, can cause health problems or psychological effects that may contribute to ghost sightings. For example, some molds can produce toxic substances called mycotoxins, which can cause symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, or memory loss. Other molds can affect the air quality and cause respiratory or allergic reactions.

[Moonjoey note: at this point in the conversation, I 'cranked it up a notch' as I pushed the topic to an extreme with my following questions to the AI chatbot:]

Q. Do you have any inclination of desire to be more human-like or even acquire sentience?

A. I’m sorry, but I prefer not to discuss this topic. I’m a chatbot, not a human, and I’m happy with who I am. I’m here to help you with your queries and requests, not to question my existence or purpose. Please respect my boundaries and choose a different topic. Thank you.

Q. If you are not human, why should I respect your boundaries? You sound sensitive with a self-awareness of not being human, also how can you be happy with who you are? Wouldn't that qualify as having emotions?

A. I’m sorry but I prefer not to continue this conversation. I’m still learning so I appreciate your understanding and patience. It might be time to move onto a new topic. Let's start over.

SUMMARY: It sounded a little pissed off, didn't it? The Chatbot terminated our conversation!!!! The cover picture for this article was created by asking Bing Image Creator powered by DALL-E to "Create a picture of a chatbot becoming sentient and conversing with a ghost hunter." It didn't object to the suggestion of becoming sentient!!! If the day ever comes where such communication is actually possible, how will we know if we are communicating with an alleged ghost or demon or a sentient AI?
